Lake Gault - Fox Glacier's New Track

After a 20-year hiatus & thanks to a dedicated team of community volunteers Fox Glacier's Lake Gault Track is open again!

Offering expansive views of the Southern Alps and now home to New Zealand’s rarest kiwi, the rowi. This new track is not yet on the radar of many, but won't stay a secret for long, so come and discover its beauty during your stay at Distinction Fox Glacier.

The track starts from the Lake Matheson carpark which is 6 kilometres from your Distinction Fox Glacier hotel accommodation. Currently graded as an intermediate level tramping track so you’ll need your hiking boots. The 8km track is rough, uneven and slippery with plenty of mud. Over the next little while it will be upgraded to an easy level walking track.

For incredible mirror reflections of Aoraki / Mt Cook and Mt Tasman / Horo-kōau the best time to visit Lake Gault is early in the morning. By mid-morning the mountains are often shrouded in cloud and the wind can pick up limiting the reflections.

Allow 3-5 hours return.

Contact the team at Distinction Fox Glacier for more information and advice about Lake Gault. They have a wealth of knowledge about the local Glacier Country region.
