From local hot spots to popular attractions, there’s always something to do when staying at either of our two Distinction and Discovery Whangarei hotels. Only 30 minutes from some of the country’s most spectacular beaches, and a mere 5 minutes from lush native bush walkways, our hotels are perfectly placed for sightseeing around Northland.
Whangarei is a city with a population of just under 75,000; with a bustling town centre full of boutique shopping and exquisite restaurants. A short stroll from both hotels is the Town Basin; where the Whangarei marina bursts with international flavour. An assortment of colourful shops, cafes and galleries can be found in this area, and it is a favourite with locals on the weekends, when live music often draws happy crowds.
The area offers stunning walking and hiking and is rich in history. At Whangarei Falls, you can see the waterfall that’s often called the ‘most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand’. Head for the summit of Mount Parahaki, the highest point in the city. It was once the site of the largest Maori Pa (fortified village) in New Zealand which can be accessed by a pleasant walk through native forest from the summit.
Whangarei is a great place to stay and explore the scenic playground of beautiful Northland. Buses depart regularly to all the major tourist attractions including the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga. Popular activities in the local area include diving the famous Poor Knights Island, swimming, fishing, surfing, visiting the beautiful sandy beaches, and bush walks.
