The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is an annual event which celebrates our local seasons. It takes place on the weekend closest to the Winter Solstice (longest night of the year) in Dunedin's Octagon.
Part of the Puaka Matariki Festival, the Midwinter Carnival is New Zealand’s largest lantern procession and is well known for its lanterns, sculptures and spectacular costumes.
This year’s dates are 21 -22 June 2024 with the theme yet to be announced.
You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of Brophy Aerials high amongst the trees, see popular projections radiating from First Church itself, watch as multiple mini lantern processions wind through the site, enjoy dance performances, live music, food trucks and so much more.
